October 10, 2007

Dennis Makishima
President of the Golden State Bonsai Federation
presented
Aesthetic Pruning of Small Trees and Shrubs in the Urban Setting
Born and raised in the San Francisco Bay area, Dennis has been teaching for over 20 years. In 1980, he began ornamental pruning of a friend's tree, using nature as his guide and in 1987 he formed the Merritt College Pruning Club, in Oakland, California. Dennis was given a Golden State Bonsai Federation grant in the early 1990s to go to Japan and study bonsai under Yasuo Mitsuya. He worked on "The Bonsai Teacher Development Guide" and "Bonsai Basics" packet, both of which are used nationally. His bonsai collection now numbers over 500 trees.
