THE GARDEN COACH |

Kerry Barrs |

Born in Toronto, Ontario Canada in 1951 to a Canadian and a Dutch immigrant, I was raised in the Greater Chicago Land of Illinois, Rockford anyone. I came to California on vacation in 1977 and never returned to the Mid-West except for the occasional holiday. After seven years in beautiful Orange County, Southern California I then lived two years in Sac-a-tomatoes. In 1986 I made my move to San Francisco and the Peninsula and began volunteering at STRYBING Arboretum Nursery where I was first exposed to rock garden miniature plants that I still collect to this day. After a few Botany classes at SFSU and CITY Collage, in the spring of 1988 I was accepted to FILOLI ‘s internship program, and shortly thereafter began my maintenance business based in Woodside. Six years of night classes at FOOTHILL College’s Ornamental Horticulture department was how I learned about the science. Attending Western Hort meetings for more than twenty years is how I learned what others were doing. Volunteering for now over ten years at San Francisco Botanical Garden at Strybing Arboretum’s education department has taught me why plants and gardeners are so important. In the summer of 2010, I began my retirement from the ‘maintenance’ business and am now focusing on my new business called ‘Garden Coach’ where I share with others what I have learned so that they too can find the ‘common ground’ between themselves and the plants they desire to ‘grow’...Kerry |

ALIVE'N SILK |

Guilin, China near the Li River, where I was born, is reputed to be the most scenic spot in the world according to an old Chinese saying. I spent two years as a graduate student at University of Arizona in Tucson; lived in New Hampshire and Massachusetts and have resided in the Bay Area for over 30 years. With this kind of diverse geographic exposure, I’m inclined to be
passionate about all types of plants…water plants to desert plants, native plants to exotics plants, giant plants to dwarf plants. My dream is to make my garden into my supermarket and to be able to harvest strawberries from my rooftop. I own an interiorscape business and a VERY messy yard! I have rare fruiting plants (white sapote, cherimoya, pepino etc.) and ornamentals (chinese golden larch, winter sweet, porcelain berry etc.) for sale, and I make custom silk arrangements to order. |
