PLANT OF THE MONTH: October 2006
Salvia guarantica "Costa Rica Blue"

If you want to keep the hummingbirds happy and have the space plant this vigorous perennial that grows six feet tall and as wide. It has heart shaped leaves and 10-14 inch spikes of nectar rich blooms in a wonderful deep violet blue that put on a show all summer long. It can be pruned to keep it tidy and to reduce the size.

"Costa Rica Blue" was selected from the blue anise scented sages. A native of South America it likes light shade or cool sun. It does best in well drained soil with moderate water and will accept light frost, taking temperatures down to 20-25F.
Barbara Worl brought a spray of this plant to our October plant discussion.
She reports that her plant reached 10 feet !!
