PLANT OF THE MONTH: April 2006
Ceanothus

Wild Lilac

Jean Struthers, garden is devoted to California natives and this is their time to shine. Her Ceanothus 'Gentian Plume' is truly spectacular with 10 in. panicles of deep blue. From the Santa Barbara Botanical Garden, it is a hybrid between C. gloriosus and C. cyaneus, an open, spreading shrub 10 to 20 ft. high and wide. The leaves are 3 ins. long and unfortunately suffer from deer damage.

Even more colorful was C. 'Wheeler Canyon' with deep blue flowers opening from pink buds in dense clusters. A Santa Barbara Botanic Garden Introduction, it was propagated from cuttings by horticulturist Dara Emery from a plant found roadside in Wheeler Gorge, Ventura County.
Most ceanothus prefer to be dry in the summer. Water them only in their first season. Unfortunately they are short lived, commonly 5-10 years. Sunset zones 14-24.
